A Guide to Deck Cleaning

December 11, 2023

This blog serves as a guide to deck cleaning. When it comes to exterior home maintenance, there is likely no job as labor-intensive as deck cleaning. Honestly, it sucks! But, with some preparation, the job will be a lot easier. Here are some tips for cleaning your deck.

Supplies Needed

  • Broom or leaf blower – To clean any loose debris from the deck surface.
  • A bucket of mild detergent or deck cleaner.
  • Stiff-bristle brush or deck scrubber.
  • Power washer and a garden hose.
  • Safety goggles, gloves, and protective clothing like rubber boots.

Prepare the Deck

Start by removing all furniture, planters, and any other items from the deck. Sweep or use a leaf blower to clear away loose debris such as leaves, dirt, and twigs. Use a garden hose to pre-wet the deck thoroughly. This helps to loosen surface dirt and prepares the wood for cleaning. Don’t skimp on this first step. Doing so will make the job a lot harder.

Prepare and Apply Cleaning Solution

Mix a solution of mild detergent or deck cleaner with water in a bucket according to the manufacturer’s instructions. If your deck has mold or mildew. For wood decks avoid using bleach at all costs as bleach degrades wood. Apply the cleaning solution to the deck surface, starting from one end and working your way to the other. Use a stiff-bristle brush or deck scrubber to scrub the surface, paying extra attention to stains, mildew, or heavily soiled areas.

Let Cleaning Solution Do Its Work

Allow the cleaning solution to sit on the deck for the recommended time specified by the product instructions. This allows the cleaner to break down dirt, stains, and biological growth. With the cleaning solution still on the deck, scrub the surface using a stiff brush or deck scrubber. Work in the direction of the wood grain to avoid damaging the surface. Use a garden hose or a power washer on a low setting to thoroughly rinse the deck. Make sure to remove all traces of the cleaning solution. Pay special attention to corners and crevices. Be careful not to damage the deck with high pressure. Always test the settings before washing your deck.

Final Steps

Allow the deck to dry completely before returning furniture or using the space. This may take a day or more, depending on weather conditions. If desired, apply a deck sealer or stain to protect the wood and enhance its appearance. Remember, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for application and drying times. Most sealers and stans recommend to allow twenty four hours of dry time and not apply in direct sunlight.
