You see and hear about this product advertised on the radio, T.V. and online, but does Wet & Forget really work? My aim is to be as objective as possible with a product that claims to be your one-stop-shop for cleaning all your outdoor surfaces this spring. Seriously, a product that claims to eliminate “scrubbing, rinsing, power washing, and even mixing solutions” deserves some investigation. It’s appealing for sure. If Wet & Forget does what it says, and will save you serious time, then by all means I want some too! Let’s take a look at the product a little more closely.
Wet & Forget
The product is branded well. They offer cleansers for your roof, siding, flat surfaces, your shower, and even products that prevent bugs and spiders. For our specific purposes we will look at Wet & Forget Moss, Mold, Mildew & Algae Stain Remover. The active ingredient is Alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride 9.9%. It’s also known as Benzalkonium chloride and is one of the active ingredients in Clorox wipes. The interesting thing is that Clorox wipes do not contain bleach, they are ammonia based, according to Leah Kennedy-Jangraw in The Science Behind Household Cleaners. Basically, Wet & Forget is the stuff you use to clean your counters, toilets, and showers. So, that’s not necessarily a bad thing, if it’s safe and effective.
Amazon rates it 4 of 5 stars with 1600 reviews. Steveypsimi loves it. He says, “Liars. They said it would take up to 6 months to work. Well got it Sunday mixed up two gallons. Sprayed 3 boats with two gallons…Well I just looked at them. On the two smaller ones the green gunk turned black. The big one with 8 years of growth changed to a lighter color. I am so happy. Saved me 100 hours of bleach and brushing that nasty stuff.” Robert Rice had a different experience. He states, “I cannot figure out how there are so many good reviews. I used this as directed…It has been about 6 weeks and I see no appreciable “before and after” difference. My biggest disappointment is that you can only return it up to 30 days, but you’re supposed to give it longer than 30 days to ensure it works.”
Before Anthony and I started Pristine Clean we used Wet & Forget numerous times for our Gutter Boys customers. We used the product mainly for siding and roof cleaning. Honestly, we were never that impressed. The product was very easy to apply, but when we tried to “forget” about it, our customers didn’t let us. Because of this, we had a long list of customer services. Even after a period time elapsed, the product always delivered lack luster results. We informed clients up-front to be patient and let the product do its thing. Needless to say, they were not impressed. Perhaps it was our negative experience with products like this that propelled us to seek a better approach, and ultimately become leaders in the power washing industry?
